Eiwa Marine Products Co., Ltd. was established in 2013 through the transfer of the trading division of Eiwa Shoji Co., Ltd. Its roots, however, trace back to the 1960s.

 

In 1963, the Eiwa Group opened Tokyo Kaikan in Los Angeles, California—the group’s first overseas Japanese restaurant. The restaurant would later become known as one of the birthplaces of the California Roll and remains part of the history of Little Tokyo.

 

At the time, seafood in the United States was generally expected to be cooked before consumption, and obtaining seafood suitable for raw preparation was a significant challenge. Japanese cuisine had yet to gain widespread recognition, and access to authentic Japanese ingredients was limited.

 

In response, the Eiwa Group established International Marine Products (IMP) in Los Angeles in 1968. The company was founded with a clear mission: to introduce sashimi-grade seafood and Japanese food products to the American market, helping lay the foundation for the growth of Japanese food culture overseas.
